Journey Wilderness

The Journey Wilderness is a unique approach to adolescent treatment using expedition-based learning modules (called Passages), which combine traditional wilderness therapy elements with modern adventure therapy. Our unique active learning model invites young men and women to explore life's possibilities, to discover who they really are and what they are capable of, and to become the person they were meant to be. The length of stay average is 50 days and it is available to both male and female clients ages 13 to 18 and young adults 18 to 25 (in separate programs). The youth experience nature while rock climbing, canoeing, backpacking, biking, and pushing handcarts.

The peaceful calm of the wilderness is an optimum place for teens to pause and start to figure out what choices have led them here. As they begin to gain insight into their circumstances they will start envisioning where they want their own personal journey to take them. Wilderness therapy helps to build self-esteem and confidence, which are some of the first steps to making life changes and good choices.

The Journey Wilderness has several ranges including the beautiful, picturesque San Rafael Swell area of southern Utah, the wilds of western Utah, and spectacular Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument. The program Director Chris Allen, has worked with teens in the wilderness for many years in different capacities from supervisor, to trek coordinator, to assistant director and director. He is a very innovative, calm and effective leader. He is capable of making The Journey Wilderness a place of learning for every client entrusted to his care. At The Journey Wilderness, teens will learn many basic wilderness skills from busting a coal for fire, to cooking, to shelter and first aid.

The Journey Wilderness program emphasizes positive reinforcement and natural consequences. Our unique, evidence-based model uses active, hands-on learning experiences to help our clients work through a process of problem solving and self-discovery. Teens are expected to read, participate, and apply the lessons learned in order to advance to the next Passage.

At The Journey Wilderness, the therapeutic programming along with Park City Independent High School, work together to create a combination of therapy and education in a truly experiential learning environment. Park City Independent High School is registered by the State of Utah, Board of Education as a Special Purpose School and has an accreditation with the Northwest Accreditation Association. (NAAS)
